ABOUT

Elbé Boshoff is an experienced and compassionate Audiologist based in Table View, Cape Town. Her experience includes eight years in the United States where she graduated from Washington University in St. Louis/Central Institute for the Deaf and completed one year as a Clinical Fellow at the House Ear Clinic, Inc. in Los Angeles. She then worked as a Clinical Audiologist at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she was involved in a broad range of Clinical Audiological Services.  She was also the coordinator of the Cochlear Implant Program.

She worked as a Research Associate at the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis for three years. She opened her private practice, Elbé Boshoff Audiology, in 2007. She has served as a guest lecturer on many occasions.

  • • Diagnostic hearing tests– The methods used to test hearing varies according to the age of the person being tested. In all cases special equipment and techniques are used. Babies and young children are tested in a fun and interactive manner while older children and adults participate more formally. The information obtained during a consultation and hearing test also contributes to the diagnosis and management of vestibular (balance problems) and tinnitus.
  • • Hearing instruments (hearing aids) – Modern hearing aids are sophisticated electronic devices that are intended to improve the hearing of the user. The ultimate goal is to improve the person’s communication, everyday functioning and quality of life. They vary by type, size and levels of technology. The purchasing of hearing aids is a process (not a once off event) which involves the fitting and programming of the hearing aids, real-ear measurements, and other verification techniques. Follow-up visits are intended to guide the user through the process of adapting to hearing aids and their care and maintenance.
  • • Hearing protection – Hearing loss that is caused by exposure to high levels of noise is highly preventable. The practice offers hearing protection products that are custom made from high-quality silicone or acrylic material. The products are moulded to the unique and individual ear canal shape of the user to allow complete closure off the earcanals and to ensure a deep fit. They can be easily cleaned and are reusable. Hearing protection is commonly used by people who work in noisy environments, motorcycle riders, people who are involved in motor sports, musicians, hunters and people who do targeting shooting. The type of hearing protection required depends on how much noise protection is needed and whether the user still needs to hear certain sounds, such as speech or environmental sounds.
  • • Occupational hearing services – Different tests are conducted depending on the employer's needs or as required by the relevant occupational health legislation. They include pre-employment tests, baseline tests, screening tests, exit tests and diagnostic audiograms.
  • • Central auditory processing disorders – Central auditory processing refers to the way the brain uses information it receives from the ears. This information helps the listener to determine the location of sound, recognise auditory patterns in speech, understand degraded acoustic signals and discriminate differences between sounds. A central auditory processing disorder is an observed deficiency in these auditory behaviours. It may cause symptoms such as difficulty in understanding spoken language in the presence of background noise, poor academic performance, poor musical or singing skills, difficulty in paying attention and inconsistent or inappropriate responding, to name a few. Treatment of central auditory processing disorder involves Elbé working closely with speech-language therapist and psychologist. It often also involves working closely with the parents and teacher of the child. Adults may also have problems with auditory processing.
  • • Hearing instrument products – All hearing aids used at Elbé Boshoff Audiology are from reputable international companies that have a proven track record and conduct ongoing research. The practice also offers repair and maintenance services for most brand of hearing aids. Minor repairs and service are done on site, while complex repairs are sent to the manufacturer in a quick and efficient manner. Elbé Boshoff Audiology sells hearing aid batteries, products to help keep hearing aids dry, cleaning materials and small replacement parts such as domes and slim tubes. Wireless technology forms part of the services provided. These products are used to control hearing aids for e.g. cellphone applications and remote controls, while FM systems and remote microphones are used to enhance hearing in more difficulty listening environments.
  • • Adult hearing loss –Hearing loss in adults have many potential causes. These include aging, noise exposure, trauma such as head injury, hereditary factors, autoimmune inner ear disease and ototoxic medications (medication that can damage the hearing nerves). Hearing loss in adults can lead to communication problems, social withdrawal and depression. New research also links untreated hearing loss to cognitive decline. Hearing loss can have a significant impact on someone’s professional, personal and social life.
  • • Hearing and children – Children learn speech and language and many other skills by listening to other people. Undetected hearing loss in infants or young children may increase the risk of speech and language delay and delays in auditory development. The sooner a hearing loss is detected the better it can be managed. Risk factors for hearing loss in children include chronic middle ear infections, general developmental delay, delayed speech and language development, infections (such as mumps, measles or meningitis). Signs of hearing loss in babies and young children include not responding to environmental sounds and a delay in speech and language development. In school going children academic problems, difficulty following instructions or giving inappropriate answers may be a sign of hearing loss.
  • • Tinnitus – This refers to a ringing sound in the ears in the absence of other environmental sounds. Even though it is possible to have normal hearing and also experience tinnitus, there is a strong correlation between tinnitus and hearing loss. Often someone with tinnitus do not think they have hearing loss but once tested results shows a small amount of hearing loss due to nerve damage. There are different therapies and products available which could potentially help sufferers manage the condition and lessen the effect of the tinnitus
