Services includes :
- Coronary artery disease: This is a condition where the coronary arteries become narrowed or blocked, which may be caused by atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is the buildup of cholesterol and fatty deposits on the inner walls of the arteries. This artery disease develops over time without being noticed. It causes symptoms such as shortness of breath, effort intolerance, chest pain, rapid heartbeat and heart palpitations which may be accompanied by sweating. Treatment for coronary artery disease is focused on decreasing the buildup of plaque and allowing better blood flow through the arteries. A diet change and exercise may be recommended, and in severe cases, cardiac catheterization and coronary stenting may be performed.
- Valvular heart disease: This is a valve disease which occurs when there is a damage or a defect in one of the four heart valves, namely the mitral valve, aortic valve, tricuspid valve and pulmonary valve. A history of rheumatic fever may raise the risk of valvular heart disease over time. This may cause symptoms such as shortness of breath, blood in the urine, heart palpitations, fever and chest pains. Valvular heart disease treatment is focused at treating the infection with the use of antibiotics and in severe cases, when a valve is damaged which may compromise the blood flow, Dr Ho may recommend surgery to replace the valve with a prosthetic or bio-prosthetic valve.
- Cardiac rhythm disorders: Heart rhythm problems also called heart arrhythmias occur when the electrical pulses responsible for coordinating your heartbeats, don't work properly, which may cause your heart to beat rapidly, too slow or irregularly. Symptoms caused by cardiac rhythm disorders may affect the quality of life, and in severe cases, it may require immediate medical management. These symptoms may include rapid and irregular heartbeat, heart palpitations, fainting, dizziness and chest pains or discomfort. To treat heart rhythm disorders, Dr Ho may recommend medications to help slow the rapid heartbeat, prevent blood clots from occurring and restore a regular heart rhythm. Implantable devices such as a pacemaker or an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator may be used to maintain normal heart rhythm.
- Congenital heart disease: This is a heart abnormality present at birth which may affect the heart walls, heart valves and blood vessels. Heart abnormalities may range from simple conditions which may cause complex problems that may lead to severe, life-threatening symptoms. It may cause symptoms such as a reduced ability to exercise, inability to lie flat, coughing frothy pink sputum, irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath and swelling in the ankles, legs and feet. Congenital heart disease treatment focuses on the cause of the problem and reduces the pressure on the heart. Dr Ho may recommend medication, and a cardiac catheterization or coronary artery stenting fix the problem. Depending on the underlying cause, the cardiologist may also recommend replacing a heart valve with the use of resynchronization therapy or an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator device (ICDs).
- Pericardial diseases: This is a heart condition where there is an inflammation in any of the layers of the pericardium. The pericardium is the thin tissue sac which surrounds the heart and consists of three layers, namely the visceral pericardium, the middle fluid layer and the parietal pericardium. It causes symptoms such as shortness of breath, heart palpitations, low-grade fever, rapid heartbeat, sharp piercing chest pains and swelling of the legs, feet and abdomen. Pericardial disease treatment involves managing the inflammation and swelling of the pericardium with the use of pain medication and anti-inflammatory agents. In severe cases, Dr Ho may recommend surgical treatment to either remove the pericardium or drain excess fluid.
- Chronic diseases: These chronic diseases include conditions such as hypertension or high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol which may increase the risk of developing heart disease. To manage and treat these conditions, Dr Ho may recommend lifestyle and diet changes, long-term medications to lower blood pressure (NQSurgicalDentistry), insulin to help regulate insulin levels in the body, and medications to help reduce high cholesterol levels and unhealthy fats in the blood. Long term management of these conditions by a cardiologist, may also be recommended to lower the risk of developing a heart disease or stroke and to ensure that your heart is healthy.
- Cardiopulmonary diseases: The heart and lungs depend on each other to work properly and may be affected by cardiopulmonary diseases such as cardiovascular disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), ventricular failure, chronic lung disease, obstructive sleep apnoea and pulmonary thromboembolic disease. These may cause symptoms such as shortness of breath, sharp chest pain, wheezing, abdominal or leg swelling, effort intolerance and a bluish colour of the skin in the extremities. Cardiopulmonary diseases treatment may involve Dr Ho working with a specialist physician or pulmonologist to decide the treatment or a combination of treatments best suited for you. These may include lifestyle changes, heart and lung medication, and surgery.
