Dr Devan Scott is a warm and friendly Specialist Cardiothoracic Surgeon based in Klerksdorp. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Pretoria and began work at Johannesburg General Hospital, where he achieved his level one trauma training. He later worked at the Cardiothoracic Unit at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town, where he grew an interest in cardiothoracic surgery.
With a niche in the diagnosis and treatment of complex conditions of the lungs and heart involving the chest cavity, Dr Scott has a substantial skill set and expertise in coronary, cardiac, pulmonary and thoracic surgeries. His patients are in good hands.
Services includes :
- Coronary artery bypass grafting – This is a procedure done to bypass the diseased or blocked artery to aid blood flow to and from the heart. This helps prevent the risk of having a heart attack. A coronary artery bypass graft or stent replacement may be recommended if your coronary arteries are blocked or diseased, which may be caused by cholesterol or coronary artery disease. Surgery depends on the severity of the blockage and how many arteries are blocked. Dr Scott will remove the damaged arteries and replace them with an artery from the chest or a vein from the leg to use as a bypass graft.
- Valvular surgical interventions of the mitral and aortic valve – Valve replacement surgery is a surgical procedure recommended for people who have conditions that affect the mitral or aortic valve. When these valves stop functioning properly, the blood flow to and from the heart will be disrupted. Surgical interventions for the mitral and aortic valves are recommended when lifestyle changes and medication has failed to treat the problem. Depending on whether the valve needs to be repaired or replaced, Dr Scott may perform either a valve repair or valve replacement procedure. After the valve has been repaired or replaced, a draining tube may be placed in your chest to aid with recovery.
- Aortic root surgery replacement and valve-sparing procedures – This is a highly specialized surgical procedure performed to repair a portion of the aorta near the heart, the aortic root while preserving the aortic valve. The aortic root is where the coronary artery attaches to the heart, which includes the annulus and leaflets of the aortic valve. Dr Scott may recommend a valve-sparing aortic root replacement if you have conditions which may damage the aortic root such as high blood pressure and Marfan syndrome, or an aneurysm in the aortic root, r is enlarged which results in the aortic valve to leak. The diseased part of the artery will be removed, measured and replaced with a graft.
- Pulmonary thromboembolic disease surgery – This is a condition where blood clots to the lungs, also known as pulmonary embolism, causes the blood vessels in the lungs to become diseased. Chronic pulmonary thromboembolic disease affects the pulmonary vessels, which may lead to pulmonary hypertension. Pulmonary thromboembolic disease symptoms may include enlarged main pulmonary arteries, atherosclerotic calcification, tortuous vessels, right ventricular enlargement and hypertrophy. Therefore, further diagnostic testing is essential to accurately diagnose and treat the condition. Dr Scott may prescribe blood thinners and recommend surgery, where he will remove the blood clots from the arteries. After the procedure, your incisions will be stitched closed.
- Miscellaneous cardiac constriction and tumour surgery – The pericardium surrounds the heart and protects it from infections and diseases. Constrictive pericarditis is a condition where the pericardium becomes inflamed, leading to scarring, thickening and muscle tightening or contracture of the heart. Diseases and infections such as HIV and tuberculosis make people more susceptible to viral and bacterial infections which may cause constrictive pericarditis or cardiac constriction. Dr Scott may recommend surgery to remove a portion of the constricting pericardium. This procedure is called a pericardiectomy, which may be performed through open surgery or minimally invasive techniques. After the procedure, a draining tube may be placed to drain any blood or fluid that may build up in the chest.
- Surgical intervention for lung cancers – This intervention is performed to remove tumours in the chest. For cancers that are localized and have not yet metastasized (spread) to other parts of the body, surgical intervention is an effective treatment for different types of lung cancers. Depending on the stage, location and size of the tumour, surgical interventions such as lobectomy, sleeve lobectomy and pneumonectomy, may be recommended. Lung cancer operation may be done before or after other cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy. During these procedures, the lymph nodes are removed to prevent cancer from metastasizing.
- Thorascopic services – These are procedures reserved for diagnosis of respiratory disease in order to accurately diagnose and evaluate comprehensive treatment. As a specialist cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr Scott provides lung diagnostic procedures to patients who are suffering from a range of symptoms related to the lungs. This aids him in accurately investigating the cause of the problem. Dr Scott performs different diagnostic procedures such as pleural effusion drainage and thoracoscopic lung biopsies. These procedures involve the insertion of a thin tube that has a camera attached to it, called a thoracoscope, through the chest cavity to test for abnormalities in the lung tissue or to remove fluid from the space between the lungs and chest cavity.
- Comprehensive TB pleural-parenchymal diagnostic and therapeutic intervention – Tuberculosis is a curable disease that is caused by bacteria spreading through droplets in the air. Pleural effusion is an unusual amount of fluid that may build up between the layers of pleura which may cover the surface of the lungs. These may be caused by pneumonia, cancer and autoimmune conditions such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis and TB remains the most common cause of the pleural effusion. To treat tuberculosis, Dr Scott may recommend lobectomy or pneumonectomy to remove the affected area of the lung, or decortications TB empyemas where the thickened pleura and empyema will be removed to enhance respiratory functioning.
- Mediastinal surgeries – The central part of the chest is called the mediastinum, which consists of the breastbone, the spine at the back and lungs on each side of the chest. Mediastinal surgeries are procedures performed as a diagnostic procedure or done to remove tumours such as thymomas, lymphomas and germ cell tumours. These tumours may affect the oesophagus, lungs, and heart. Depending on the stage, location and size of the tumour, Dr Scott may recommend sternotomy or thoracotomy. These procedures may be done through minimally invasive techniques when possible, otherwise may be performed through open surgery. After the procedure, you may need further cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
- Tracheal resections – The trachea is a pipe or tube that divides into 2 small pipes called the bronchi, which are responsible for supplying air to each lung. Tracheal resections are performed when there is a narrowing or constriction of the trachea, which leads to difficulties in breathing. This may be caused by conditions such as airway blockages, cancerous and noncancerous tumours, and larynx problems. Surgery is often recommended if there is a damage or injury to the trachea or injury to the throat and infections such as tuberculosis. There are different types of tracheal resections, namely laryngotracheal reconstruction, laryngotracheal resection and reanastomosis, tracheobronchial airway stent and tracheostomy.
