- Endodontics
A root canal is a procedure that’s performed to dissect the soft inner material or pulp of the tooth. The pulp consists of connective tissue, nerves and blood vessels which promote tooth growth. The point of a root canal is to preserve the crown, the part that sticks out from the gum line. Once the pulp becomes infected, a root canal is necessary. The pulp is already dead, so it needs to be dissected. The hollow structure of the tooth remains intact. Injury to the pulp may be due to deep tooth decay and chips or cracks in the tooth. - Prosthodontics
Prosthodontics involves the restoration of missing teeth. Crowns, bridges, inlays, onlays and dentures can replace or restore missing teeth. Missing teeth can alter a person’s facial structure and cause his or her jaw to sag. Several missing teeth can also affect one’s bite. Crowns are porcelain dental caps that replace the portion of the tooth which juts from the gum-line. Crowns camouflage chipped teeth and restore one’s smile. Bridges consist of several synthetic teeth that are used to replace lost teeth. Inlays and onlays are made from ceramic, porcelain or composite and are used to repair cavities. Dentures are an alternative to dental implants and may be full or partial. - Paediatric dentistry
Children need to see the dentist as soon as their teeth start to sprout. As a parent, Dr Haripersad is gentle with her paediatric patients. She teaches children the value of good oral health and performs soft teeth cleaning services to preserve baby teeth for as long as possible. Oral care in its early stages prevents future cavities, tooth decay and loss. Preventative and restorative dentistry form part of Dr Haripersad’s paediatric services. - Cosmetic dentistry
Stained, missing, chipped or broken teeth can affect one's self-confidence. Cosmetic dentistry is a specialised field of dentistry that focuses on teeth, gum and bite aesthetics. Bonding and contouring, veneers and teeth whitening are cosmetic dentistry techniques that are implemented to restore one's smile. Veneers are wafer-thin dental shells that are used to cover damaged teeth. Veneers are superficial covers that camouflage chipped, uneven and crooked teeth. Coffee and cigarettes leave behind stains. Teeth whitening, a popular cosmetic dentistry procedure, is used to brighten stained teeth. Bonding and contouring is another cosmetic procedure that’s used to correct overlapping or misshapen teeth. Bonding is a procedure whereby naturally-looking resin is moulded over the tooth after a cavity. Tooth bonding takes half an hour to an hour to complete, and that's just for one tooth. A special dental light is used to contour and harden the resin in its place. - Orthodontics
Orthodontics involves the treatment of malocclusion as well as misaligned and misshapen teeth. Skew teeth affect one’s bite and confidence. Smile aligners, braces and splints are different types of orthodontic treatment devices. Dr Haripersad uses the Myobrace System to correct malocclusion in children between the ages of three and fifteen. Removable oral appliances may be worn for two hours a day to prevent the need for braces at a later stage in life. - Preventative dentistry
Preventative dentistry is a specialisation that involves preventive measures to prevent tooth loss as a result of tooth decay, gum disease and wear and tear of tooth enamel. Dr Haripersad carries out bi-annual check-ups and cleaning to avoid the build-up of plaque which leads to tooth decay. Regular tooth brushing cannot replace a professional dental cleaning that rids the mouth of tartar. People who suffer from bruxism and TMJ disorder are at high risk of dental decay and gum disease. With the use of an Epic laser, Dr Haripersad relieves facial pain. Laser therapy only takes ten minutes and is an effective treatment for TMJ disorder. - Periodontics
Periodontics is the care of gums and bone structures that reinforce the teeth. Gum disease is a severe illness that affects the teeth and bone. Gingivitis and periodontitis lead to early tooth loss. It's essential to look for signs of the disease. Bad breath, red and swollen gums, pus, bleeding gums and oral ulcers are signs of gum disease. While brushing twice a day and a mouth rinse may prevent gum disease, a dental deep clean stops the progression of the disease. Sometimes, for severe cases of periodontitis, a deep surgical cleaning to remove the pockets of bacteria stuck in the gums is needed. - Sports dentistry
Sports dentistry is aimed at athletes who engage in extreme sports like wrestling, hockey, rugby, skateboarding, boxing, gymnastics and mountain biking. Teeth may become chipped or fall out due to a sports injury. Even a tooth that has been hit out can be salvaged-it's essential to seek immediate medical care when this occurs. The use of mouthguards is vital to prevent tooth loss as a result of contact sports. Sports mouth guards protect athletes against oral injuries like split lips and cracked or chipped teeth. Mouthguards are custom-made for a precise fit. For custom-made mouthguards, impressions are made and sent to the laboratory for development. - Oral surgery
While it’s essential to preserve and protect our teeth, decayed teeth need to be removed. Wisdom teeth may also need to be dissected due to its position in the mouth. Wisdom teeth form later on in life and can cause complications-these teeth hit against other teeth and lead to crowding. Dr Haripersad can remove any number of wisdom teeth under conscious sedation. Laser surgery is used to remove abnormal tissue that leads to speech impairment, particularly in children. The benefits of laser surgery are that there's minimal or sometimes no bleeding at all. - Dental restorations
Fillings are a form of dental restoration. A filling itself is made from a composite resin that's used to fill in the cavity after the diseased part of the tooth is removed. The filler material matches the rest of the colour of the teeth. When there's a crack in the tooth bacteria can seep into it. It's essential to see the dentist even for a chipped tooth. Fillings restore the appearance of teeth, improve its functionality and prevent infection. - Laser dentistry
Laser treatment is a quick and reliable alternative to drills or other dental devices. Laser dentistry is used for cosmetic procedures such as teeth whitening as well as tooth decay and gum disease. The beam from the laser creates a reaction when it reaches the soft tissue-this makes it easier to remove or remould the tissue. Lasers provide quick pain relief as it kills bacteria stuck in the tooth cavity and also aids in soft tissue procedures to maximise one's "gummy smile" and treat tongue frenulum.
