ABOUT

Below is a list of conditions related to gastroenterology which Dr Pettengell can treat:

  • Constipation is a condition which arises when you experience less than three bowel movements per week. Treatment for this condition includes making changes to your diet and lifestyle in general, taking laxatives, training your pelvic muscles to relax so you may pass stool easily. Another treatment is the surgical removal of the entire colon, but this is done only as a last resort.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome is a disorder which affects the large intestine. Treatment is focused on relieving symptoms so that you may live a comfortable life. This involves getting enough sleep, drinking lots of fluids, exercising regularly and eating high-fibre foods.
  • Haemorrhoids, which are also called piles, are engorged veins in your anus and lower rectum. Treatment includes home remedies, over-the-counter creams, ointments or pads and surgery as a last resort (haemorrhoidectomy).
  • Anal fissures are when the thin, moist tissue lining the anus tears. Treatment involves surgery or non-surgical treatments such as topical anaesthetic creams, eating high-fibre foods, lots of fluid intakes, avoid straining during bowel movements, botulinum toxin Type A injection and blood pressure medications.
  • Perianal abscesses occur when there is a build-up of pus around the anus. Surgical drainage is done to treat the abscess so that it does not erupt.
  • Anal fistulas occur when the tunnel between the skin and the muscular opening at the end of the anus is infected. This is treated via surgery (fistulotomy).
  • Diverticular diseases are conditions which impact the large intestine, small bulges or pockets develop in the lining of the intestine. Treatment is administered through antibiotics, eating a high-fibre diet and surgery, which is done as a last resort.
  • Colitis occurs when the large intestine is inflamed, which then causes watery diarrhoea. This is treated through a diet of low-fat and low-fibre, no dairy products, gluten, caffeine, sugar, steroids, medications which block the bile ducts and anti-inflammatory medications.

Colon polyps are small clumps of cells which grow in the lining of the colon. Treatment involves removing the polyps via a polypectomy, removing the polyps laparoscopically and a colon and rectum removal
