Pulmonology Update
12-14 July 2019
Groote Schuur Hospital
We would like to invite you to register for the upcoming Pulmonology Update course to be held on the 12-14 July 2019 at Groote Schuur Hospital. The Update is a joint initiative of the UCT Lung Institute, Lung Infection and Immunity Unit and the Division of Pulmonology, and Groote Schuur Hospital, which aims to provide practical approaches for a range of common respiratory problems for doctors working in primary and secondary level care. The Pulmonology Update is endorsed by the South African Thoracic Society.
The organizing committee (Professor Keertan Dheda, Dr Ali Esmail, Dr Greg Calligaro, Dr Richard Raine, Dr Greg Symons and Dr Lynelle Mottay) has devoted much time and effort in organizing a stimulating and comprehensive program for the diverse audience. The focus of the Update will again be primary health care approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis, allergic rhinitis, airways disease (both asthma and COPD), and the treatment of upper and lower respiratory tract infections. This year, however, we intend on adding a third day with topics directed at specialist physician level. Specifically, subjects to be covered will include advances in pulmonology, sleep-disordered breathing, pulmonary hypertension and office-based spiromertry. The focus will be on clinical practice and prescribing for the jobbing clinician.
Following on the success of last year’s course, which was attended by more than 60 general practitioners, family medicine registrars, internal medicine registrars and medical officers, we have expanded the event this year by advertising nationally, and anticipate a strongly positive response. The Update will now be held over three days, with the first day focussing on primary health care the second with interactive “hands-on” workshops scheduled and the third focussing on topics for the specialist physician. Please find attached provisional scientific programme.
