Dr Ashleigh Bhanjan is a specialist neurologist who runs his private practice in Durban Neurolaser Clinic. Dr Bhanjan attained his MBBCh from the University of the Witwatersrand and is a Fellow of the College of Neurologists of South Africa. Parkinson's disease is a severe brain disorder that's similar to dementia. A slight tremor is the first sign of Parkinson's disease. Tremors usually begin in the fingers and hands and become worse when the limb is at rest. There's also minimal facial expression in the early stages of the disease. The patient’s speech is also affected as it starts to slur and become soft. Posture and balance problems also occur. People who have Parkinson's disease experience changes in their posture. A stooped posture is a typical physical effect of the disease. A change in one’s writing is another sign of Parkinson’s disease. Small, illegible handwriting is something to look out for. - Multiple sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis is a brain illness that affects the central nervous system. Multiple sclerosis occurs when the immune system attacks the myelin, which protects nerve fibres. When the immune system attacks the sheath, complications arise. Nerve damage is to be expected due to the worn-out protective covering (myelin). A numb sensation in the limbs and a lack of balance and coordination are general symptoms of multiple sclerosis. Electric shocks may occur when a person turns his or her head or bends their neck. - Stroke
A stroke is a neurological condition that requires urgent medical care. A stroke occurs when there's a limited supply of blood to the brain. When there's a blockage that obstructs blood flow to the brain, the tissues of the brain don't receive an adequate supply of oxygen and blood to function as it should. Without oxygen brain cells die within a matter of minutes. Paralysis, speech issues, confusion and difficulty walking are all signs of a stroke. It's crucial to seek treatment to prevent brain damage, disability and death.
