Services includes :

  • Emergency procedures
Emergency management and treatment is essential for neurosurgical emergencies in order to prevent further neurological damage. The most common brain injury is a direct traumatic brain injury. Blood supply restriction to the brain may lead to a shortage of oxygen required for cellular metabolism. Acute hydrocephalus, infection, traumatic or infective spinal injuries, and haemorrhagic injury that is a result of a ruptured vascular malformation like a cerebral aneurysm are conditions that require immediate medical attention. As a neurosurgeon, Dr Modikeng may perform an emergency surgical procedure like a craniotomy, spine surgery and surgical stabilization. These procedures are done to either drain a blood clot, relieve pressure on the spinal nerves and stabilize the spinal cord.
  • Brain pathologies
These are pathological conditions or disorders that affect the brain like intracranial bleeds, hydrocephalus, brain tumours and congenital malformations, to name a few. Hydrocephalus is a medical condition where there is a build-up of fluid in the ventricles of the brain which may put pressure on the brain. This pressure may damage the brain tissues causing a range of impairments in the brain. Congenital malformation, also called congenital anomalies, are abnormalities or defects present at birth or diagnosed late in life, such as a bleeding disorder. Intracranial bleeds are acute bleeding that occurs in the brain or skull, which is a life-threatening condition and needs immediate medical attention.
  • Spinal pathologies
These are spinal conditions or disorders which may affect the spine and spinal cord like degenerative diseases, congenital malformations, and spinal tumours. Degenerative spine diseases are spinal disorders that cause loss of normal spinal structure and function. The conditions are normally due to age, repetitive strains and overuse of the back. To treat these conditions, Dr Modikeng may perform a laminectomy or spinal fusion to make room for nerves and fuse the bones together. Congenital malformations are spine abnormalities that occur after birth or develop later in life. Treatment for these conditions depends entirely on the condition, its severity and overall health. Dr Modikeng may recommend braces or corrective surgery.
  • Endoscopic procedures
These procedures involve the neurosurgeon passing a tube with a lens and a light, called an endoscope, through an incision to look at your internal organs. This minimally invasive procedure is performed to diagnose and treat brain and spine diseases while minimizing trauma to the surrounding tissues. Diagnostic endoscopic procedures are normally performed to obtain biopsies from a lesion in the brain and skull. Endoscopic neurosurgery is normally performed to treat head and neck tumours, herniated spinal discs, facial bone and skull fractures, nervous system cysts, etc. During the procedure, Dr Modikeng will insert the endoscope through the nostrils or incision to the affected area. She will then treat the problem and stitch closed the incisions if they were made.
