Dr Prashanth Maharaj completed his undergraduate training at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in 2009 and completed his internship at Addington Hospital in 2010. He completed his community service year at Wentworth Hospital. He then began his General Surgery specialist training at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in 2013, after which he joined the Department of Neurosurgery at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital. In 2016 Dr Maharaj was awarded the Discovery Award for Best Oral Platform Presentation at the Society of Neurosurgeons of South Africa. The award was presented at the Congress of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting in San Diego. Dr Maharaj remained at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital as a Medical Officer in Neurosurgery, rotating in Neurosurgical ICU and Trauma ICU until he completed his specialisation in Neurosurgery through the Fellowship of Neurosurgery (FCNeurosurg(SA)). He completed his master's in medicine in Neurosurgery at UKZN at the same time. Dr Maharaj has moved to Life Entabeni Hospital in Cape Town as a Specialist Neurosurgeon.

  • Brain Tumours
    A brain tumour is an abnormal growth of cells. Intracranial tumours can develop in the brain, cranial nerves, brain envelopes, skull, pituitary, and pineal glands. Depending on the location of the tumour, brain function can be affected. When a tumour is cancerous, various doctors and specialists may be on the medical team working together towards a treatment plan. A brain tumour can develop on its own, and most tumours have metastasised from other tumours in the body. Brain tumours may need to be removed if they affect the function of the brain. Depending on the severity, Dr Maharaj will discuss the best approach with the patient. Chemotherapy and radiation may be suggested in addition to therapy in terms of brain cancer.
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries
    A traumatic brain injury is an alteration in brain function which manifests as an altered level of consciousness, seizure, coma, or focal neurological deficit, which results from a blunt or penetrating force to the head. Head injuries are commonly due to falls, motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries, and other blunt forces. Injuries could range from a mild concussion to severe or permanent brain damage. Emergency surgery may need to be conducted to mitigate additional damage to brain tissue, make sure there is enough oxygen and blood supply, maintain blood pressure, and prevent further injuries to the neck and head.
  • Spinal Cord Tumours
    Spinal tumours are abnormal masses of tissue that occur within or surrounding the spinal cord or spinal column. Tumours occur when cells grow and multiply hastily. Spinal tumours can be benign or malignant. If the spinal tumour is at risk of damaging the spinal cord or nerves or growing more prominent, it may be surgically removed. Early diagnosis is essential for early treatment.
  • Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery
    Minimally invasive neurosurgery is a range of minimally invasive procedures performed on the brain and spine. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) procedures usually involve laparoscopic devices and surgical instruments through either a microscope or an endoscope. Neurosurgery is performed as treatment for a number of conditions, including degenerative disc disease, spinal cord tumours, brain cysts and tumours, brain aneurysms and hydrocephalus.
  • Microscopic Brain Surgery
    Brain surgery encompasses various procedures to repair a structural issue in the brain. Microscopic brain surgery is a procedure where the neurosurgeon will use a microscope to perform the procedure. Microscopic Brain Surgery may be an option in surgeries such as brain aneurysm clipping, brain arteriovenous malformation resection, and brain and skull base tumour resection.
  • Brain Aneurysms and Arteriovenous Malformations
    A brain aneurysm develops when a weak spot in the brain's arterial wall bulges and fills with blood. It affects people of any age and may occur naturally, through inheritance, and as a result of brain injuries. If the aneurysm bursts, brain damage, a stroke or death could occur if not left untreated. A brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is an abnormal tangle of blood vessels that connect arteries and veins in the brain. Arteries are responsible for transporting oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the brain, and veins carry the oxygen-depleted blood back to the heart and lungs. An AVM disrupts the arteries and brain's process and may develop anywhere in the body but often occur in the brain or spine. Dr Maharaj will perform complex surgery to repair an aneurysm or arteriovenous malformation.
  • Acute Traumatic Spinal Cord Injuries
    A spinal cord injury is damage that may occur in any part of the spinal cord or nerves, often causing a temporary or permanent loss of function. Spinal cord injuries may result from a violent attack, falling from a significant height, head or spinal injuries during sporting events, electrical accidents, and severe twisting of the torso's middle portion. Dr Maharaj will treat acute traumatic spinal cord injuries with immediate medical attention. Dr Maharaj will prevent shock and immobilise the neck to prevent further damage to the spinal cord. Intensive care and emergency surgery may be administered.
  • Spinal Degenerative Disease
    Spinal degenerative disease is an umbrella term for numerous diseases in the spinal column due to ageing and wear and tear. Increased neck and back strain can increase the likelihood of wear and tear. These generative diseases of the spine can coincide. Spinal degenerative diseases include herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and degenerative disc disease. Dr Maharaj may recommend conservative therapy or neurosurgical treatment depending on the severity of a specific case.

    Brain surgery is a surgical treatment for brain conditions, disorders, or injuries. Endoscopic brain surgery is a minimally invasive treatment that uses a thin device with a camera and light attached to it, called an endoscope, to explore and treat a number of conditions, including blood clots, abnormal blood vessels or brain arteriovenous malformation, skull fractures, brain tumours or fluid building up in the brain.

    Microscopic Spine Surgery Microscopic spine surgery is minimally invasive neurosurgery done to treat specific spinal conditions. These conditions are degenerative disc disease, a herniated disc, osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, and spinal tumours.
