Dr Rosa-Marie Rust is a Specialist Oncologist based in Life Anncorn Hospital, Klerksdorp. She obtained her MBChB degree from the University of Pretoria and completed her MMed Radiation Oncology in 2011 at the University of the Free State.
Dr Rust ventured into private practice in 2011, where she focuses on treating all solid tumours such as breast, prostate, GIT and skin cancers, with a keen interest in the treatment of lung cancer. Treatment possibilities may include immunotherapy, chemotherapy, endocrine and radiotherapy.

- Breast tumours:
A tumour is a mass of tissue that develops due to the accumulation of abnormal cells. Breast cancer develops in the cells of the breast and may develop in both men and women, but is more common in women. There are different types of breast cancers, namely, angiosarcoma, ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), and invasive lobular carcinoma, to name a few. Signs and symptoms of breast cancer include a breast lump, change to the skin over the breast, a newly inverted nipple, and change in breast size, shape or appearance. It may be caused by hormonal, lifestyle and environmental factors, or may be inherited. Dr Rosa-Marie Rust will conduct a breast exam, mammogram, breast ultrasound or a biopsy, to diagnose breast cancer. Treatment may include surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy and chemotherapy. - Prostate Tumours:
These are abnormal cell growths that occur in the prostate. The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that is situated between the bladder and the penis. It is responsible for producing seminal fluid that helps nourish and transport sperm. In the early stages, prostate cancer may not cause any symptoms. However, in advanced stages, it may cause symptoms such as difficulty urinating, blood in semen, bone pain, erectile dysfunction and discomfort in the pelvic area. As an oncologist, Dr Rust will conduct a digital rectal exam and a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test to screen for prostate cancer before diagnosing any prostate problems. Treatment may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. - GIT cancer:
Gastrointestinal cancer is a group of cancers that occur in the digestive system. These cancers may include oesophageal cancer, stomach cancer, colorectal cancer and anal cancer, to name a few. Risk factors of GI cancer include smoking, increasing age, obesity, diet and excessive alcohol consumption. It may cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, fatigue, rectal bleeding, change in bowel habits and bloating. Diagnosis depends on the type of cancer that is suspected depending on your symptoms. Dr Rust will perform an endoscopy, biopsy and lab tests, to accurately diagnose you. Treatment for gastrointestinal cancer depends entirely on the type of cancer you are diagnosed with, stage of cancer and overall health. Treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. - Skin cancers:
This occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, especially on skin that is exposed to the sun, such as the scalp, face, lips, ears, neck, chest, arms and hands. There are different types of skin cancers, namely, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Depending on the type of skin cancer you have, symptoms include or waxy bumps, a firm red nodule and a painful lesion that may burn or be itch. Dr Rust will first examine your skin, particularly the shape, size, colour and texture of the suspicious area of your skin. Treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy and cryotherapy. - Lung cancer:
This is a type of cancer that occurs in the lungs. The lungs are two organs in the chest that are responsible for taking in oxygen when inhaling and releasing carbon dioxide when exhaling. People who smoke are at great risk of developing lung cancer. The condition may cause symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing up blood and losing weight. Dr Rosa-Marie Rust may conduct imaging tests, sputum cytology, and biopsy to accurately diagnose you. After diagnosis, the oncologist will work to determine the stage of your cancer. Treatment for lung cancer may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted drug therapy. - Chemotherapy:
This is a drug treatment which uses powerful chemicals in order to kill fast-growing cells in the body. Chemotherapy is commonly used to treat cancer due to cancer cells growing and multiplying faster than most cells in the body. This treatment may be used on its own or in combination with other treatments to treat a variety of cancers. Chemotherapy may also be used to treat other conditions such as bone marrow diseases and immune system disorders. Chemotherapy drugs may be given in different ways, including infusions, pills, shots, creams and may be given directly to the cancer. Based on how the treatment will be administered, the characteristics of the cancer and how well your body recovers after each treatment, this will determine how often you will receive treatment. - Immunotherapy:
This is a treatment that uses the immune system to fight cancer by helping the immune system recognize and fight cancer cells. The immune system helps protect the body from infections, illness and disease. The immune system consists of the spleen, lymph glands and white blood cells. Immunotherapy is a common treatment for certain cancers such as skin cancers and lung cancers. There are different types of immunotherapy drugs such as monoclonal antibodies, vaccines to treat cancer, cytokines, and CAR T-cell therapy. This treatment may be administered in different ways such as oral, topical, intravesical (directly into the bladder), and intravenous (directly to the vein). - Radiotherapy
This is a type of cancer treatment which involves the use of beams of intense energy in order to kill cancer cells. This treatment normally involves the oncologist using x-rays, protons and other types of energy. During radiotherapy, high energy beams are used which come from a machine outside your body which aims the beams at a precise point on your body. Radiation therapy may also be placed inside the body through another type of radiation treatment called brachytherapy. This cancer treatment damages cells by destroying their genetic material which is responsible for controlling how cells grow and divide. - External beam:
External beam radiation therapy is a type of cancer treatment which involves the use of a linear accelerator, a special x-ray machine. This machine delivers high-energy rays (radiation) to tumours which may also help reduce the risk of side effects that are associated with traditional radiation therapy. There are different types of external beam radiation therapy, namely 3D conformal radiation therapy, image-guided radiation therapy, proton beam radiation therapy, and stereotactic radiosurgery. Before receiving treatment, Dr Rosa-Marie Rust will examine you, review your medical history, including your test results, and locate the area that needs to be treated. - IMRT:
Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is another type of radiation therapy that is used to treat patients with cancer and noncancerous tumours. This treatment uses advanced technology to manipulate proton and photon beams of radiation in order to conform to the shape of the tumour. The main goal of IMRT is to target the radiation beams to reduce the risk of side effects and damage of the healthy tissue. IMRT normally requires multiple treatment sessions on different days. Dr Rust will consider the type, location and size of the tumour, dose, and the patient's overall health in order to determine the number of treatments needed. - Brachytherapy:
This is a procedure which involves the oncologist placing radioactive material inside the body. Brachytherapy is a type of radiation therapy which targets cancer internally and is often also called internal radiation. This treatment allows oncologists to deliver higher doses of radiation, which then may reduce side effects. Brachytherapy may be used in combination with other treatments or alone to treat several types of cancer such as cervical cancer, vaginal cancer, prostate cancer, rectal cancer and head and neck cancers.
