ABOUT
Dr Nick York is a specialist ophthalmologist who practises at St George’s Medical Centre in Port Elizabeth. He is the only internationally-trained corneal surgeon in Port Elizabeth. Dr York specialised as a corneal and anterior segment surgeon at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne, where he gained expertise in corneal transplantation, cataract surgery, as well as laser and corneal collagen cross-linking procedures. He took part in clinical trials at the Centre for Eye Research in Australia and wrote a chapter on corneal transplantation.
Dr York attained his MBBCh with distinction from the University of Witwatersrand and obtained a Diploma in Ophthalmology. He contributed to outreach programs in cataract surgery in rural areas as part of the Red Cross Air Mercy Services’ initiative. Dr York is a Fellow of the College of Ophthalmologists of South Africa and a recipient of the Justin Van Selm medal. He completed his Master’s Degree with his research on Corneal Donations in South Africa which was published in the South African Medical Journal.

- General Ophthalmology
As a qualified ophthalmologist, Dr York diagnoses and treats illnesses of the eye, eyelid and eye socket in both adult and paediatric patients. He resolves eye tumours, cataracts, eye infections, corneal ulcers, dry eye, allergies and injury as a result of trauma. He also treats neurological conditions of the eye such as double vision, optic neuritis and ischaemic optic neuropathy. Eye exams, cataract and corneal surgery are his specialities. - Cataract surgery
Cataracts occur when the eye lenses begin to fog up. The cloudy film that covers the eye lens makes it difficult to see, especially at night while driving or reading. Double vision, faded colours, sensitivity to light and halos are symptoms of cataracts. Prescription glasses provide some relief, but for more severe cases, cataract surgery is needed. For this type of eye surgery, Dr York removes and replaces the milky lens with a clear synthetic lens. Before surgery, he takes measurements of the eye lens to create a new one. - Corneal surgery
The cornea is the dome-shaped part of the eye that allows it to focus. Corneal surgery, also known as keratoplasty, replaces the damaged part of the cornea with donor tissue. A corneal transplant reduces eye pain and restores one’s eyesight. Dr York is the only corneal surgeon in Eastern Cape who spent a year of training at Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Australia. He offers premium corneal transplantation for corneal scarring and keratoconus. Dr York uses advanced lasers for corneal transplantation. The ophthalmologist may also use an instrument, similar to a cookie cutter to remove the diseased tissue. This type of surgical tool, also known as a trephine ensures a precise circular cut. He then replaces diseased tissue with a donor or artificial cornea. - Medical retinal
Dr York provides eye screenings for retinal medical conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, artery occlusions, retinal tears and retinal dystrophies. As an expert in advanced medical technology, Dr York uses state-of-the-art 3D retinal scans and cameras to diagnose retinal medical diseases. He administers Anti-VEGF injections, which stops bleeding from abnormal blood vessels in the eye. He offers retinal laser treatments as an outpatient procedure at St George’s Eye Centre.
