Dr Beyers Oosthuizen is a Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in minimally invasive surgical treatments of conditions and injuries that affect joints and related tissues. He finished top of his medical studies at the University of Pretoria and began his orthopaedic career in 2008 at Steve Biko Academic Hospital. Here he was a Medical Officer and later a Registrar in Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr Oosthuizen completed his studies in 2013 at the top of his class. He became a consultant at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and was a Senior Lecturer at the University of Pretoria. During this time, Dr Oosthuizen began to perform joint replacement and arthroscopic surgery exclusively. In 2015, he moved to full-time practice working at Netcare Unitas Hospital and Mediclinic Midstream Hospital. Dr Oosthuizen offers comprehensive care for a range of degenerative conditions and trauma injuries but has a niche in knee surgeries such as knee arthroscopy, knee ligament surgery, meniscus surgery, and total or partial knee replacement surgery.

  • Knee Arthroscopy
    Arthroscopic knee surgery or keyhole surgery is a minimally invasive surgery that identifies and treats knee problems. A small device called an arthroscope is used to observe damaged tissue inside the knee with an attached camera. Patients suffering from stiffness, joint pain, or damage to their knee cartilage can benefit from knee arthroscopy. The procedure can also be done to repair fractures in the knee or reposition the patella or kneecap.
  • Knee Ligament Surgery
    A ligament is a strong, fibrous, elastic tissue structure connecting bones to other bones in the body. Tendons connect bones to muscles and ligaments together with tendons, essential for joint movement and mobility. There are four knee ligaments, the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), medial collateral ligament (MCL) and lateral collateral ligament (LCL). These ligaments connect differently in the knee and are susceptible to injury. When these ligaments tear as a result of trauma, surgery is required. The most common ligament injury is an ACL injury which connects the thigh to the shin bone. If ligaments are mildly injured, they can heal on their own.
  • Meniscus Surgery
    Meniscus surgery repairs torn cartilage tissue in the knee. The meniscus is a cartilaginous structure found in the knee joint that assists with movement between bones, affects knee strength and serves as a shock absorber. It can assist with stability and load-bearing strength of the knee too. The meniscus can tear due to knee trauma during strenuous sporting activities or accidents. Dr Oosthuizen performs meniscus surgery arthroscopically using small tools and minimally invasive incisions.
  • Total and Partial Knee Replacement
    Total and partial knee replacements or knee arthroplasty are performed for patients with chronic knee pain and instability due to arthritis. The severity of damage to the knee joint, surrounding cartilage and soft tissue can lead to Dr Oosthuizen replacing the entire knee joint (a total knee replacement) or parts of it (a partial knee replacement). This procedure is done to enhance mobility, reduce pain and improve function.
  • Total Hip Replacement Surgery
    Hip replacement surgery replaces damaged joints in the hip with synthetic prosthetics made of metal, plastic, or ceramic. Joints can suffer degeneration due to numerous conditions that affect patients as they age. The most common conditions include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteonecrosis. Osteoarthritis causes damage to the cartilage that helps bones move smoothly. Rheumatoid arthritis is the inflammation in joints and bones that can affect cartilaginous health. Osteonecrosis can occur in hip joints due to injury and limits blood supply to the ball of the hip joint, and can cause damage to the bones in the hips.
  • Revision Hip and Knee Replacement Surgery
    Orthopaedic surgeons can replace damaged joints and other tissues of the hip or knee with prosthetic implants, susceptible to infection and damage. Revision surgery is needed when prosthetics replacing hip or knee joints suffer wear and tear over time. Dr Oosthuizen will perform hip or knee surgery to replace the affected prosthetic components.

    The rotator cuff is a group of tendons and muscles in the upper arm that assists mobility in the shoulder. It is a collection of tissue that ensures rotation of the arm. The muscles and tendons of the rotator cuff are most commonly injured in parts of the shoulder. Shoulder surgery repairs severe rotator cuff tears that can restrict arm mobility and cause pain and discomfort. Shoulder surgery can be done to treat frozen shoulder.
  • Shoulder Arthroscopy
    Arthroscopic shoulder surgery repairs rotator cuff tears. It is minimally invasive and involves small surgical incisions. Dr Oosthuizen may opt to perform open shoulder surgery to access damaged tendons in the rotator cuff instead. The rotator cuff is a group of tendons and muscles in the upper arm that assists mobility in the shoulder. It is a collection of tissue that ensures rotation of the arm. The muscles and tendons of the rotator cuff are most commonly injured in parts of the shoulder.
