ABOUT
Dr Shaheen Bismilla is an exceptionally experienced orthopaedic surgeon. He matriculated from Potchefstroom Boys High 2002 and then obtained a medical degree from the University of Pretoria in 2008. He then did an internship at Kalafong Hospital in Pretoria, which included working in internal medicine, obstetrics & gynaecology, surgery, paediatrics, anaesthetics, orthopaedics, psychiatry and family medicine. After completing the internship, he proceeded with doing a year’s community service in the same hospital in 2011. He then did a primary examination through the Fellowship of the College of Surgeons of South Africa (FCS SA) for which he was awarded the prestigious Trubshaw Medal. In 2012, he worked as the Medical Officer in Orthopaedic Surgery at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital and received guidance for six months from Professor G. Richards. He then completed the Advanced Trauma Life Support training program in 2012, as he wanted to further his skill set. After a basic trauma course through the AO foundation in 2013, Dr S Bismilla was accepted as a Registrar at the University of Witwatersrand in the department of orthopaedic surgery. In October 2016, he obtained an FC Orth (SA) degree in Orthopaedic Surgery from the Fellowship of the College of Orthopaedic Surgeons of South Africa and then an MMED degree in Orthopaedic surgery in 2017. He then did a one-year Fellowship in knees at the Rosebank Netcare Hospital. Dr S Bismilla is mainly focused on knees and sports injuries
Services includes :
- Arthroplasty; this is done for joints that have been damaged by arthritis. In extreme cases, Dr S Bismilla would advise a total knee replacement.
- Trauma & general orthopaedics; Dr S Bismilla conducts several orthopaedic surgeries including surgery needed for trauma to bone, ligaments, tendons and other soft tissues
- Knee arthroscopy; a minimally invasive surgical technique done to treat conditions that affect the knee.
- ACL reconstruction; surgery is done arthroscopically and done to repair the functioning of the knee joint and stabilise the knee
- MPFL reconstruction for patellar dislocation; if and when the MPFL is weakened or torn, reconstruction surgery might be done to repair the ligament and stabilise the knee joint
- Knee collateral ligament repair and reconstruction (MCL and LCL); you may need this after a knee injury, and you will be put under general anaesthesia.
- PCL ligament reconstruction; for a PCL injury, you may need reconstruction after the damage has been done to the bent knee.
- Quadriceps & patella tendon rupture repair; surgery is required to repair the quadriceps and patella tendon after they have been damaged to obtain the optimal outcome
- Knee meniscus repair & debridement; there are two procedures that Dr S Bismilla may perform to treat a meniscus tear; a repair and a debridement procedure.
- Sports overuse injuries & tendinopathies; these may be caused by an increase in duration and intensity of exercise. Treatment usually includes non-surgical methods such as rest, ice and compression, as well as anti-inflammation and pain medications
- PRP injections; these contain red cells, white cells, and platelets of blood, which are useful in clotting blood, growth and healing of injuries. They are used to treat several musculoskeletal conditions to help speed up the recovery process.
