• Neonatal care
  Infants born prematurely or have severe underlying problems are normally admitted in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) within 24 hours after birth. These problems may include underdeveloped lungs, unstable body temperature and slow weight gain. Infants admitted in the NICU have trouble feeding; therefore, they receive breast milk or baby formula through feeding tubes and may need support breathing. Premature babies are likely to develop infections, jaundice, anaemia and heart problems. The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) includes hospital equipment like incubators, ventilators, feeding tube, intravenous (IV) drip and vital signs monitor.
• Acute and chronic paediatric services
  Exposure to pollen or respiratory infections may lead to the lungs being inflamed, resulting in the airways overreacting to certain particles in the air. Paediatric asthma makes the bronchial tubes in the lungs to spasm, resulting in the lining of the lungs to be inflamed. This causes symptoms like difficulties breathing, respiratory infections, tight congested chest and worsening cough due to flu or a viral infection. Other paediatric conditions may occur, including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which is common during winter and spring months. Acute and chronic services may include paediatric and adolescent HIV care as well.
• Emergency paediatrics
  This involves Dr Samkelo Jiyana taking care of children diagnosed with paediatric conditions like pneumonia, gastroenteritis, cardiac decompensation, neuro infections and paediatric infectious diseases. Pneumonia is normally caused by bacterial pneumonia called pneumococcus. This causes a delicate lung tissue infection where fluid accumulates in the lung's air sacs resulting in phlegm, coughing and breathing difficulties. Acute and chronic bronchitis occurs due to the presence of viruses that causes flu and cold, which may then cause wheezing and blocked airways. Acute cardiac decompensation is heart failure that is associated with congenital heart disease and cardiomyopathy in infants.
• Neonatal cardiac services
  Congenital heart defects in infants occur during foetal development resulting in an undeveloped heart and blood vessels, which may occur due to genetics. Heart malformations are most common in babies born with Down syndrome. To diagnose congenital heart defects, Dr Jiyana will inject a special dye into the blood vessels of the heart and examine and check for narrow or blocked blood vessels. He may then correct clogged heart arteries doing the diagnostic test by performing the angioplasty procedure. Treatment may include balloon septostomy and removing the obstruction of blood flow.
• Paediatric cardiology services
  Dr Samkelo Jiyana helps diagnose and treat paediatric cardiologic conditions such as cardiomyopathy, atrial septal defect, and hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). Cardiomyopathy is an acquired chronic congenital heart disease which occurs when the heart muscles thicken and enlarged, resulting in the heart failing to pump rhythmically. This may lead to lack of blood supply to the rest of the body and can result in sudden death or heart failure. An atrial septal defect is when there is a hole in the heart’s upper chambers, resulting in an increase in blood volume flowing into the right atrium, right ventricle and the lungs. HLHS is congenital heart disease where there is a malformation of the left side of the heart that results blood not being pumped regularly. Treatment of these conditions may include the use of surgery to correct the malformation or defect.
