ABOUT

Dr Nelson De Abreu is a specialist paediatrician who is passionate about the health and wellbeing of his little patients and their parents.

Born in Welkom, Freestate, Dr De Abreu’s interest in child health care began at an early age. After obtaining his Medicine Degree (MBChB) at the University of Cape Town in 2012, he pursued his passion for Paediatrics and Child Health in Kimberly, completing his postgraduate studies at the University of Free State.

In 2020, he became a Fellow of the College of Paediatricians of South Africa and completed his Masters in Paediatric Medicine, for which his dissertation focused on neonatology and the survival rate of very low birth weight (less than 1500 grams) premature infants.

Dr De Abreu treats little ones with empathy and compassion and strives to help parents better understand their child's health and needs.

His practice is based in Welkom, Free State.

  • Neonatology and neonatal care
    Neonatology and neonatal care involve the care and treatment of newborn infants in the first 28 days of life. Premature babies and sick newborns are treated in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Illnesses that commonly affect newborns include jaundice, sepsis, cradle cap and colic. Dr De Abreu manages these conditions, as well as other congenital disorders, through comprehensive treatment plans. As a paediatrician, Dr De Abreu can also consult with your OB/GYN if illnesses are detected during pregnancy and be present at the birth of your baby. At birth, your baby’s heart rate, breathing, birth weight, temperature, skin and eye health will be examined to identify any concerning symptoms.
  • Development, behaviour and learning
    Childhood development and learning involve the physical, mental and emotional growth of a child. As your child grows up, they develop social, language, movement and cognitive skills. These skills are important for the health and wellbeing of every child. Dr De Abreu conducts tests through each developmental milestone to determine school readiness and detect any learning difficulties that may be present. Monitoring your child's development, behaviour and learning patterns helps ensure that they are on the right track to adolescence and adulthood.

    Long term illness that affect your child’s quality of life can be difficult and stressful to cope with. Dr De Abreu’s bio-psycho-social approach works to help both you and your child manage long term, chronic illnesses. Common chronic conditions in children include epilepsy, asthma, diabetes and primary immune deficiencies.
  • Common Ailments
    Conditions such as fever, tonsillitis, sinusitis, allergies, diarrhoea, constipation and bedwetting are common ailments that affect children. Dr De Abreu treats these ailments with care, taking into account the distressing nature of having an ill child and making sure parents feel confident in managing them.

    Dr De Abreu is passionate and enthusiastic about paediatrics. His specialist interests include paediatric cardiology, paediatric nephrology and paediatric critical care.
