Dr Clementine Chawane is a compassionate and empathetic psychiatrist who believes in providing all her patients with all the necessary tools to combat any disorders they may have which affect their mental and even physical health. She is well-qualified with a BSc degree which she obtained from MEDUNSA in 2003 and after that a medical degree from the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine in Kwa-Zulu Natal. After graduating in 2008, she did a year’s internship at Mankweng Hospital in Pietersburg and then spent some time doing community service in Sheshego Hospital. Dr Chawane then returned to Mankweng hospital in 2012, working as a medical officer in the Psychiatry department. Setting her sights on gaining more experience, she relocated to work as a medical officer at Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital in 2013. In 2014, she was a registrar at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital through the University of Witwatersrand and then obtained a qualification through the Fellowship of the College of Psychiatrists of South Africa (FC Psych SA). Dr Chawane works with personality, substance use disorder, neurocognitive, eating, psychotic, anxiety and mood disorders. She takes a psychotherapy-based approach

  • Mood Disorders; these types of disorders have an impact on your mood and are often caused by factors beyond your control. Dr Chawane will evaluate to know best how to treat your mood disorder
  • Anxiety and Related Disorders; these involve constant worry and fear, and once this arises, you must seek help from your psychiatrist.
  • Personality Disorders; caused by genetic and environmental factors. If you start to notice changes in your behaviour or that of your loved one, do see Dr Chawane so she may make a proper diagnosis and look at treatment options
  • Substance Use Disorders; the continuous use of a substance can affect the neurotransmitters in your brain. Here, treatment is focused on overcoming addiction and preventing relapse. · Neurocognitive Disorders; a result of neurodegenerative diseases which cause the brain and nerves to deteriorate over time. Dr Chawane will run tests such as a CT scan, PET scan or EEG.
  • Trauma and Related Disorders; caused by trauma and a range of environmental and genetic factors. Your psychiatrist will conduct an evaluation, make a diagnosis and then offer treatment to best help you cope with the trauma you are experiencing.
  • Obsession and Compulsive Disorders; the cause is linked to biology, genetics and environmental factors. Your psychiatrist will evaluate you to decide on treatment options to help with control over your obsessions.
  • Eating Disorders; caused by genetics, environmental factors, social and cultural factors. After a diagnosis, treatment will be tailored to each individual.
  • Psychotic Disorders; mostly hereditary or due to chemical imbalances in the brain. Treatment is different for each individual but usually consists of medication and therapy
  • Child and Adolescent Psychiatry; treatment varies for each child or adolescent but is often medication and therapy.
