- Asthma: This is an inflammatory disease which affects the airways to your lungs resulting in swollen and tight airways which may be filled with mucus. Signs and symptoms of asthma include coughing, wheezing and chest tightness. Asthma may be a nuisance, while it may interfere with everyday life and lead to permanent narrowing of the airway, which will affect the ability to breathe. Environmental factors such as smoke, fume exposure and pollution, and genetics may be the cause of asthma. Even though there is no cure for asthma, symptoms may be managed to prevent severe asthma attacks and complications such as permanent tightening of airways.
- Hypertension: This is a condition which occurs when blood forcefully exerts against the blood vessels walls. This pressure depends entirely on the resistance of the blood vessels and how hard the heart needs to work. Hypertension or high blood pressure may lead to severe health complications and increase the risk of stroke or heart disease. Signs and symptoms of hypertension include sweating, anxiety, sleeping problems, headaches and nosebleeds. Causes of high blood pressure may include an underlying condition or medications such as kidney problems, thyroid problems or sleep apnoea. Depending on your health, Dr Kenaope may prescribe medications such as water pills and ACE inhibitors, to help manage and treat hypertension.
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): This refers to a group of chronic inflammatory diseases which affects the lungs by obstructing the airways, which then causes problems with breathing. Emphysema (damage to the walls of the aveoli’s walls) and chronic bronchitis (inflamed or narrowed bronchial tubes) are the most common of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This condition is progressive and may worsen over time, but in the early stages, it may cause symptoms such as a mild cough or shortness of breath which may later become constant leading to difficulties in breathing. Left untreated, pulmonary diseases may cause respiratory infections, heart problems, lung cancer, high blood pressure and depression as it may affect the quality of life.
- Diabetes mellitus: When the body stops producing enough insulin or is unable to use the insulin it produces, it is then called diabetes. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder which affects the body's ability to use the energy found in food, which may result in excess of sugar in the blood. There are 4 types of diabetes, namely, type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, prediabetes and gestational diabetes. Depending on the type of diabetes you are diagnosed with, it may be caused by genetics, being inactive, abnormal cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and obesity. Symptoms of diabetes include frequent urination, extreme thirst and hunger, unexplained weight loss, frequent infections and sore that heal slowly.
- Pulmonary tuberculosis: This is a contagious bacterial infection which attacks and destroys the lung tissue. Pulmonary tuberculosis may be treated and cured with antibiotics when it’s diagnosed early. It is caused by a bacteria called mycobacterium tuberculosis and may be spread by coughing, sneezing or laughing. Signs and symptoms of tuberculosis include coughing up phlegm or blood, constant fever, chest pain, fatigue, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. When left untreated, tuberculosis may cause life-threatening complications such as permanent lung damage. Tuberculosis may cause no symptoms but may be present in your system, called latent tuberculosis.
- Pulmonary complications of a stroke: Stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is constricted or interrupted, it will then be deprived of oxygen and nutrients, which leads to the death of brain cells. Stroke is a medical emergency which may need prompt treatment to prevent paralysis, brain damage, memory loss, speech impediment and self-care ability, including feeding. A feeding tube may be required, which may cause pulmonary complications such as pneumonia. Depending on the severity of the condition, it may lead to gas exchange abnormalities and in some cases, mechanical ventilation may be needed. It may also increase the risk of airways and lung problems such as sleep apnoea, venous thromboembolism, swallowing abnormalities, aspiration and pneumonia.
